My Top 5 Ideas to Test Solo Traveling

October 8, 2023

Though many people want to embark on a solo traveler journey, the idea of going somewhere alone, especially for a longer period of time, can be quite overwhelming.

Here you can find my top recommendations on how to get started with solo traveling and ease into it:

  1. Take a day trip or excursion – Baby steps. Start out small and give yourself time and space to get used to the idea of traveling solo. Jump in the car and go on a day trip somewhere a couple hours away from home! Look up a nice restaurant, food truck or dessert place at your destination, treat yourself, and head home at the end of the day feeling relaxed and recharged. Or if available in your area, book a one day excursion somewhere. You will still go with a smaller or bigger group, and you have a chance to meet others and share company, but you still do it on your own!
  2. Do a mini staycation – Try a weekend getaway right there in your city or nearby, in an area that you still know well and are comfortable with, so you take out the stress of being somewhere unknown from the occasion. Look for an affordable hotel or Airbnb, take a book with you, relax, and maybe start planning your next getaway!
  3. Plan a quick weekend getaway – If you feel more adventurous, plan something a little farther away from home. Maybe a bigger city, where public transportation makes getting around easier. Or a smaller town, where you can drive to but once there, you can forget about the car for the weekend, and just walk to places. Or go to an all-inclusive resort, where you will have everything you need to have fun. Leave your worries at home, and just enjoy! A couple days away from home on your own is a good start! And you can still do video calls with your family or best friend if you feel like, and share with them the amazing places you go to!
  4. Go on a short cruise – If you live close to a cruise port or can get to one relatively easily and fast, book a 3-4 day cruise! Cruises are very easy, as once you get there, basically everything is taken care of. A bit like the all-inclusive resorts. You have your accommodation, your food and drinks all day, entertainment, and you will never feel alone. Crew members will work to put a smile on your face, and if you’re just a little bit social, you will for sure meet a lot of nice guests too on board! And as a bonus you will explore new places as your “floating hotel” takes you to other ports.
  5. Sign up for a group tour – If you’re not really a cruise person, look for other types of tours. There are great multi-day bus tours, where they usually have accommodation, a tour guide, pre-planned itinerary with attraction entrance fees, and even sometimes breakfast included in the package. So again most of the things are taken care of, or if not, the guide will still assist with options/recommendations. You just need to show up and be willing to have fun!
Do you need help with deciding and/or making the first step? Do you need a little hand-holding and reassurance that you make the right choice? Is it overwhelming to plan and make the booking?
